Viktor Orbán’s announcements today may have surprised those who started from the government communication of the previous days. In fact, messages in recent weeks have suggested that the government is in a decision-making position because it wants to consider easing restrictions over Christmas. Also, based on certain speeches and messages, our feeling may have been that only the extent of relaxation is in question. Viktor Orbán’s announcement today suggests that the government has become much more cautious about the internal situation of the epidemic. At 10, it had to be decided what would happen in the country at the end of the 30-day limit anyway. Thus, the expected relaxation turned into a tightening, an extension of the terms. The government has jumped from the only real relaxation option, a few days of “looking the other way” at Christmas.

And while that may be surprising now, it is actually a much more understandable decision than the communication of the days before.

The point of today’s decisions is that The curfew will remain in effect until January 11 and other strict measures, that is, the curfew will be maintained between 20:00 and 05:00. New Year’s Eve is no exception. The afternoon of December 24 will be decided on December 21.

Maintaining rigor is probably not surprising to those who follow the national epidemiological situation in Portfolio articles. Last time, in our summary article on Sunday, we showed that the epidemic is still spreading very dynamically in Hungary: even if the epidemic curve is no longer on the ascending branch, it is true that we still cannot talk about a branch strong descending.

It is also likely that the government has assessed the level of support for relaxation among the population. According to them, epidemiological data from recent days and weeks have not yet convinced people that lifting austerity would be justified.

It is also a logical step that the Dec 24 decision has been postponed because they can make a much more informed decision as Christmas approaches.

All in all, we can say that for the fight against the epidemic to be a success (that is, to slow its spread), the government has made an important and forward-looking decision, while leaving a legal vacuum for the 24th of December. And the latter is important because approaching the Christmas holidays, both epidemiologically and politically, the government has taken time to make the ideal decision.
