Sándor Sára and Marianna Moór’s professors, Balázs Sára, were appointed to head the Institute of Film and Media only after signing a letter that was sent to them.

There is growing resistance from students and teachers to the reduction of the autonomy of the University of Theater and Film Arts (SZFE) due to the government’s decision to continue the university as a foundation under Attila Vidnyánszky. More and more world-famous artists are joining the solidarity movement around SZFE, but the Vidnyánszky family is not expanding. You can follow the latest developments in the SZFE scandal in our article series.

Balázs Sára has appointed a cinematographer and film and television director as interim director of the Institute of Film and Media at the University of Theater and Cinematographic Arts, according to a letter from hvg.hu. Balázs Sára replaces the sound engineer Gábor Balázs, who resigned in protest at the change in the university’s model, along with the directors of all the other institutes.

The members of the new board of trustees did not inform the university professors or students of the fact of the appointment: they could only fulfill the title for the first time as one of the signatories of a letter sent to the film professors. The professors are unaware that the position, as has always been the case at the university, has been claimed again.

Miklós Kásler, Minister of Human Resources, expresses his condolences to Balázs Sára at the final farewell to the Sándor Award-winning film director Sára Kossuth, Artist of the Nation, a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts at the Basilica of San Esteban on October 11, 2019

By the way, the letter, signed by Tamás Lajos, a member of the Board of Trustees and the two newly appointed vice-rectors, János Zalán and Emil Novák, summoned the film teachers to a “personal meeting”.

We ask for your opinion, we start a constructive discussion about the needs for further development of the University, raising the quality of education to a higher level, and the conditions for it.

– He declared in the letter, in which he also asked the teachers to inform the secretary of studies if they were “open to common thought”. “Let’s build together a high-quality university worthy of internationally renowned Hungarian cinema!” – close the letter.

Sára Balázs Sára Sára is the son of two-time Kossuth and Balázs Béla Prize-winning film director and Marórna Moór Kossuth and two-time Jászai Mari-winning actress. He also graduated from SZFE in 1986, specializing in cinematography. From 2012 to 2014, he trained cameramen in a professional training course called the Theater and Film Institute. (In an earlier version of our article, it was wrong to say that the institution had something to do with SZFE – ed.) Sarah has directed or recorded various art shows for the public media and has been the director of photography for various Duna TV shows.
