A Japanese company has developed an ultraviolet lamp that kills the coronavirus but does not harm people’s eyes or skin, writes The Guardian. The Ushio Care222 lamp, developed in collaboration with Columbia University, will be able to disinfect passenger compartments, medical waiting areas and similar infectious spaces in vehicles, even when crowded with people.

Ultraviolet radiation has so far been known to kill the SARS-Cov-2 virus, but the World Health Organization has strongly urged that no one disinfect with UV light because it can cause skin cancer and eye damage. The Japanese company’s lamp, on the other hand, radiates 222 nanometers instead of the usual 254 nanometers, so it does not harm the skin or eyes.

The lamp claims that the company can kill 99 percent of viruses and bacteria in a three-square-foot area in six to seven minutes. According to Ushio, the product was also tested at Hiroshima University and the results confirmed the company’s claims.
