The protesters threw lighted firecrackers into the courtyard of the government building, chanted vulgar words directed at the prime minister and attempted to break through the door, the TASR news agency reported.

Police lined up in front of the building and used tear gas and a water cannon against aggressive protesters.

Police conflict management experts also attempted to communicate with the protesters, several of whom, according to the TASR, were showing signs of intoxication. Several people were injured on both sides in a clash between police and protesters. Authorities have detained several people, but their exact number is not yet known.

The anti-government demonstration in Bratislava took place at a time of national emergency, when, among other things, public gatherings of more than six people were prohibited. Interior Minister Roman Mikulec, in response to what happened, said those responsible were not avoiding punishment. According to Mikulec, the police had to use violence because the protesters refused to disband even in the face of repeated calls from the authorities.
