The 71-year-old prime minister was vaccinated in front of television cameras at Seba Hospital, near Tel Aviv, with the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine. Second was followed by the Minister of Health, Juli Edelstein. Head of State Reuven Rivlin will be vaccinated on Sunday. By their example, leading statesmen want to encourage Israeli citizens to get vaccinated as well. Healthcare workers and those at risk will be vaccinated first.

“This is a great day for Israel,” Netanyahu said. “I believe in this vaccine,” he added. The end of the pandemic is already on the horizon, Israel will receive millions of vaccines, he said. He asked the Israelis to follow his example. Some 60,000 people are expected to be vaccinated in Israel every day.

Meanwhile, the daily number of people infected with the new coronavirus has reached an unprecedented peak, surpassing 2,800 three days this week. The authorities have anticipated further tightening if the number exceeds 2,500 again.

In Israel, the number of infections rose sharply in the summer after a relatively mild onset. This was due, among other things, to the relaxation announced too early. In mid-September, the government introduced a second adjustment, which resulted in a significant drop in the numbers. From mid-October, the government gradually relaxed again, at which point the number of infections began to rise again.

Those who get vaccinated receive a “green card” with various benefits. They can avoid the obligation of quarantine, visit public events and restaurants. The card is expected to be delivered to those affected two weeks after the second vaccination.
