Obese people should pay special attention to avoid coronavirus, as they are more likely to be hospitalized and ventilated, said Róbert Bedros, chief physician at the Szent Imre University Teaching Hospital, head of the National Center for Obesitology.

According to international patient data, obese people under the age of 60 are twice as likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit, and those who are overweight are even worse off than on mechanical ventilation. Every second obese coronavirus patient needs hospital treatment in the US, and the situation in Europe isn’t much better. Róbert Bedros told growth.com:
In the case of obese patients, each unit of increase in the body mass index increases the complications of those receiving intensive care, that is, their life prospects deteriorate.
What could be the cause of the problem?
- higher abdominal pressure reduces lung capacity,
- a chest laden with fatty tissue is more difficult to move with a ventilator,
- The question is also where to place the obese, since patients weighing more than 200 kg may already need a special load-bearing bed, which is not available in all care settings.
A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, higher cholesterol levels and insulin resistance and diabetes are more common, while obesity has a higher risk, the CEO warned.
Evidence for an association between obesity and the coronavirus can be found in various databases. For example, according to an Italian study of a total of 1,591 patients treated in the intensive care unit, the most common comorbidities in patients aged 63 years and older were hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, while lung disease was relatively minor.
In the US experience, a significant proportion of younger patients admitted to intensive care units were obese.
The data clearly showed that overweight coronaviruses are at higher risk regardless of age.
The association between coronavirus and obesity is also observed when the need for mechanical ventilation arises. Ninety percent of ventilator-connected patients have been severely overweight so far. That is, the severity of Covid infection also gradually increases in proportion to the severity of obesity.
