Coronavirus: Hungary has broken a sad world record

In Hungary, a total of 340 people have died from the coronavirus so far, deaths per million inhabitants are 35, while the number of diagnosed infections is close to 3,000. According to the main indicators, Hungary has avoided becoming a focal point, due in large part to its restrictive measures taken quickly, that is, it has successfully tackled the first wave of the coronavirus epidemic. The second phase of coronavirus control in Hungary has officially started.

According to international data, the first phase was closed as

  • the total number of deaths is 340, with the 33rd highest number of deaths claimed by the epidemic worldwide,
  • the number of diagnosed cases was 2998 people, which placed us in 60th place in all cases,

while the coronavirus appeared in 187 countries / territories.

It is obvious that there is some inconsistency between our classification by the two indicators. Based on the total number of deaths (340 people), we can say that there is no other country in the world where so many people have died with such a low number of diagnosed cases.

The mortality rate of around 300 is made with 6000-18000 cases diagnosed in most countries. In contrast, with an order of magnitude of 3,000 cases diagnosed, we see 80-150 deaths in most countries.

The 340 deaths and the almost 3,000 diagnosed cases represent a crude death rate of over 11%, such a high rate can be seen mainly in countries with overburdened healthcare systems, but this is not the case in Hungary at all. The high mortality rate does not mean that every tenth patient dies in Hungary, but rather that in many cases Hungarian patients were not diagnosed by the epidemiological and health care system in the early stage of the epidemic.

Based on all this, we can say with certainty that, depending on the number of deaths, the epidemic in Hungary is much more extensive than the numbers of cases show and, consequently, the detection of the epidemic in Hungary is extremely low . And poor detection also suggests that some of the more severe cases were not diagnosed in the early (early) stage of their illness, which could have improved the chances of isolation and recovery.

We no longer have to wait long to find out how many may have contracted coronavirus infection in Hungary since the representative national survey began. In the period of the new phase of the epidemic, testing may become more extensive in Hungary.
