The mandatory use of the mask outdoors was reintroduced in the city center of Genoa in Liguria as of Thursday, with mayors protesting against the introduction of the coronavirus on the border between Italy and France, while Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced that he has no plans to close the country again.
The president of the province of Liguria in northeast Italy, Giovanni Toti, and the mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci, jointly ordered the restrictive measure due to the coronavirus epidemic.
For the first time since May 18, the use of a mask has again become mandatory not only indoors but also on the street, even if a safety distance of at least one meter can be maintained between people.
At the moment, the measure applies to the historic center of the city of Genoa, with a population of almost 600,000 inhabitants, as well as to the so-called old port area. The use of protective equipment is also mandatory in restaurants, except when consuming the requested food or drink, it can be read in the provision. Violations of the rules can be punished with the closure of five to thirty days.
The use of the mask was reintroduced after On Wednesday, 63 of 108 new patients examined in Liguria were diagnosed in the center of Genoa. In forty cases, the infection occurred “randomly”, during the contact search it was not possible to show contact with relatives, co-workers and acquaintances. According to the mayor, the hardening aims to stop the possible strengthening of the focal point.
At the same time, the mandatory use of outdoor masks spread to the nearby city of La Spezia, where it was introduced on September 11, after nearly 1,000 new patients were examined in a week.
Across the province of Liguria, attention has been drawn after the coronavirus epidemic once again reaches its peak in neighboring France. The Ministry of Health has introduced a quarantine obligation for those arriving from Paris and centers in France. However, Gaetano Scullino, mayor of Ventimiglia on the border between Italy and France, said that no controls had been introduced at the border crossing.
The mayor of several border cities himself established a virus test on newcomers in protest at the introduction of the disease. In Liguria, one and a half million, nearly thirteen thousand people have been screened and more than 1,500 patients have died since the outbreak began.
In an interview with La Stampa, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte ruled out closing the country again.
“If necessary, we can blockade some areas,” he declared. He stressed that the situation in Italy is currently better than in many other European states and that health authorities are prepared for another possible wave of contagion. Conte asked the young people to work together to avoid another peak in the epidemic.
The controversy sparked by Secretary of State Paolo Sileri’s proposal to reopen the Olympic Stadium in Rome with one third of the seats occupied, or up to twenty-five thousand spectators. Several stadiums in Italy have already opened their doors to a maximum of a thousand spectators.
According to data from Wednesday night, the number of people diagnosed since February has exceeded three hundred thousand, of which more than 220,000 have recovered and almost 36,000 have died.
