About a third of those treated with Covid-19 in British hospitals required further hospitalization within four months of their discharge, and one in eight patients died during the same period, according to a study in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers from the Univerity College London, the University of Leicester and the Office for National Statistics have compared the medical records of some 48,000 patients requiring hospitalization for Covid-19 and discharged before August 31, 2020 with a control group from the general population. Medical data included rate of need for further hospitalization, mortality, and severity of respiratory, heart, kidney, liver, and metabolic diseases, including diabetes.

It was found that after an average of 140 days, of the 47,780 patients included in the analysis, 14,060 required additional hospitalization within approximately 140 days, and approximately 5,875 died during the same period.

Those treated in hospital for Covid-19 may have a higher rate of organ damage (multi-organ dysfunction) compared to the control group, the researchers found.

The increased risk is not limited to the elderly and is not the same for ethnic groups. The diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of post-Covid syndrome require an integrated and nonspecific approach to an organ or disease, and urgent research is needed to explore risk factors. Their results indicate that the long-term burden of Covid-19 may be significant for hospitals and the healthcare system.
