The company said the day before, based on an interim analysis of clinical trial results, that the vaccine provides 79.34 percent protection against coronavirus infection.

It is the first vaccine developed in China to be officially reported on its efficacy.

Conditional authorization means that the investigation is still ongoing and the authorities may request additional data from the manufacturer on the efficacy and safety of the product, in particular on its use in groups with different health profiles.

The Sinopharm vaccine is inactivated, which means that it contains a virus that cannot grow in human cells and makes people resistant to the coronavirus by triggering their own immune response.

The company said that 99.52 percent of people vaccinated with the two doses had high levels of antibodies capable of neutralizing the coronavirus. Overall, the vaccine was considered safe, although side effects were not addressed in the efficacy communication.

The 79.34 percent efficacy meets the requirements of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Chinese Pharmaceutical Inspectorate, which is why the manufacturer submitted its marketing application. The license was even granted by the Chinese pharmaceutical industry on Wednesday, CNBG said in a statement Thursday.

In China, an emergency program launched in July has already vaccinated about a million people with three domestically developed experimental vaccines, including two Sinopharm vaccines. Another free vaccination campaign aims to vaccinate another fifty million people in early February to ensure a safe celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year in February.
