Slovenian health minister Tomaž Gantar resigned after his party, the Democratic Party of Pensioners in Slovenia (DeSUS), left the right-wing four-party coalition government headed by Janez Janša a day earlier, television said on Friday. public service.

I have always tried to do my job with conscience, responsibility and commitment. I think we did an important activity together

Gantar wrote in his resignation letter.

DeSUS President Karl Erjavec even said on Thursday that the party’s two line leaders, Health Minister Tomaž Gantar and Agriculture Minister Jože Podgoršek, will not resign, and their removal will be decided by Prime Minister Janez Janša. .

Later, Janša and several politicians pointed out that the pension party’s statutes oblige ministers to resign if the political bloc leaves the ruling coalition.

DeSUS’s main body decided on Thursday to leave the coalition government and also decided that Erjavec would be its candidate for prime minister.

Erjavec explained this by the withdrawal of government support due to the critical internal political situation in Slovenia, which was not caused by the coronavirus epidemic or the work of individual ministers, but by Janša’s policy.

The coalition of the right-wing Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), the New Christian Democratic Slovenia (NSi), the Modern Central Party (SMC) and DeSUS has so far had 46 members of parliament in the 90-member legislature. The pension party has five of these representatives.

The government has not lost its majority in the legislature because it also has the external support of three members of the right-wing opposition Slovenian National People’s Party (SNS) and two minority members, as well as a DeSUS representative, who will be expelled from the party .
