European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has full confidence in Věra Jourová, Vice President of Securities and Transparency, whose departure is demanded by the Hungarian government, EU spokesperson Dana Spinant said at a regular press conference in Brussels on Tuesday.

The background to the case was that Věra Jourová, vice president of the European Commission, called Hungary a “sick democracy” and said that Hungarian citizens of the European Union “were not in a position to express an independent opinion.”

In response, Justice Minister Judit Varga published a letter in English written by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in response to Věra Jourová’s remarks. In a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, the Hungarian Prime Minister informed the President of the European Commission that he had asked Věra Jourova to resign due to her statements insulting Hungary and the Hungarian people. She also made it clear that until this happens, the Hungarian government will suspend bilateral political relations with the vice president of the body.

These statements are not only an attack on the democratically elected Hungarian government, which is slowly becoming commonplace, but they are also offensive to Hungary and the Hungarian people. The first is wrong, the second is unacceptable. As the Vice President’s statements are incompatible with his mandate, his resignation is inevitable. Until this happens, Hungary will suspend all bilateral political relations with Věra Jourova.

Spokesperson Dana Spinant has now confirmed that Ursula von der Leyen has received a letter from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán calling for the resignation of Czech EU Commissioner Věra Jourova. The president of the EU committee promised to respond to the letter.

The Commission’s concerns about the rule of law in Hungary are well known and will be addressed in detail in the report on the rule of law scheduled for Wednesday.

The spokesperson summed up. The report will analyze the situation of the rule of law in all EU member states, he added.
