“This is a sad day for press freedom,” underlined Dunja Mijatovic, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe based in Strasbourg, in a message posted on Twitter on Tuesday that the Metropolitan Court dismissed Club Radio’s demand to renew the use of the spectrum.
“Another silenced voice in Hungary. Another sad day for media freedom,” Dunja Mijatovic was quoted as saying by MTI.
According to the ruling of the Metropolitan Court on Tuesday, the request to renew the right to use the frequency used by Klubrádió was legally rejected by the media council for reasons of legal exclusion. Klubrádió’s official seven-year contract for the use of Budapest 92.9 MHz runs from February 14, 2014 to February 14, 2021. The Media Council rejected the radio’s renewal request in September 2020 in accordance with the provisions of the Media Law.
Club Radio can appeal the first instance decision made at noon on Tuesday at the Mansion.
