Dave Greenfield, keyboardist for The Stranglers, died of a coronavirus at the age of 71, writes The Guardian.
Stranglers is one of the most distinctively sounding bands of the British punk / rock / newwave era, which has written countless great songs since its founding in 1974, including hits that are probably known to those whose band names don’t say much anyway. One of those songs is definitely Golden Brown:
The musical basis for this song was written by Greenfield, who otherwise played less common instruments in rock music, such as the harpsichord or electric organ, while composing songs.
The band members mentioned Greenfield as a musical legend and a very good friend in their parting announcements. In addition to Jean-Jacques Burnel and Jet Black, it was Greenfield who had been a member of the band from the beginning.
The Stranglers were founded in 1974, and while they have been less active in recent years, they would have embarked on a farewell tour this summer, which they eventually had to cancel due to the epidemic.
