Chick Corea died at the age of 79, it was announced on the world-famous jazz musician’s Facebook page. He suffered from a rare cancer and died on February 9.
In the news of his death, Chick Corea is quoted as saying before his death:
“I want to thank everyone who contributed to the light of music during my trip. I hope that those who feel compelled to play, compose, act or anything else can do so. If not for themselves, then for us. Not just because the world needs more artists, but because it’s so much more fun. “
Chick Corea was born in 1941 and grew up near Boston. His father was a jazz trumpeter and learned to play the piano and drums as a child. He also attended Columbia University and the Juilliard, but soon dropped out of school to give concerts.
He began working with Miles Davies on Lost Quintet in the late 1960s. In 1972, he formed Return to Forever, which also featured bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Lenny White, guitarist Bill Connors, and guitarist Al Di Meola.
He has been nominated for a Grammy Award 60 times and received it 23 times. (last in 2020 for the 2019 Antidote album). He released his latest album, Plays, in 2020.
Chick Corea was a huge fan of classical music, he regularly mentioned his love for Béla Bartók’s works in his interviews. Influenced by the Microcosm pieces, he wrote a series called Children’s Song, and the piece Ostinato was performed as a four-handed play with Herbie Hancock.
