Red Bull and AlphaTauri are looking for a new engine supplier because the Japanese manufacturer will be out of the series at the end of the 2021 season.

If no new entrants enter, a total of three motor carriers will remain in Formula One for the 2022 season, as Honda announced Friday morning that it will be leaving the series at the end of next season.

The Japanese manufacturer last returned to F1 in 2015 as a McLaren partner, a year after the teams began racing with turbo hybrid assets, but the collaboration was unsuccessful and the parties parted ways after three years.

Honda became the engine supplier for Toro Rosso starting in 2018, and the following year it also served Red Bull, which had been using Renault resources until then, winning a total of five races with the two teams thus far.

The company announced its decision citing the transformation of the auto industry. They wrote that they plan to move away from internal combustion engines and become carbon neutral by 2050. Obviously, it was also an important consideration for the manufacturer that starting in 2022, changed in a year due to the coronavirus epidemic, the race cars radically reworked will be included in F1. True, there will be no such change in the field of engines, it is expected that its new generation will not appear until 2025.

Honda’s departure puts Red Bullt and Alpha Tauri in a difficult position, writes Formula1.com. Under the rules, Renault will have to commit to supplying two stables, as they currently have the fewest customers in the field, if they cannot reach a deal with Ferrari or Mercedes.
