Even in the middle of the week, it was unclear whether the Audi ETO KC in Győr would actually play on Saturday afternoon in Moscow, where CSKA Moscow awaited the Hungarian team in the group stage of the Women’s Champions League. Győr’s official website reported on the organizational difficulties, the chaotic start, the attitude of the European Handball Association and the late training on Friday, with a detail that is rarely read at this level.

The club president, Csaba Bartha reports that Russia, like Hungary, has closed its borders to foreigners and can only participate in sports on the originally announced date.

“The phone lines between Győr, the headquarters of the European Handball Association in Vienna, and Moscow have been burned, and I can honestly say that not only has the match been questioned due to entry difficulties, but I have already abandoned it. Exactly one week before the game, we stayed with the officials of the European Handball Association to wait until noon on Monday 7 September for the Russian foreign newspaper. “
By comparison, the newspaper didn’t arrive until Monday, but the EHF asked for more patience and two more days. Finally, at the last minute, Győr received the comments and the visa required for the trip can be collected from the Russian embassy in Budapest.
In addition to entry papers, reserving a machine was also a constant problem. Several of the team’s flights were canceled at the last minute, despite trying in vain from Vienna or just from Istanbul. In the situation, they also thought about renting a special machine, but due to much higher fees than before, this was scrapped for the first time, the report adds. However, after the other flight cancellations, the charter plane became the “run-in”.
“Never before has Audi ETO KC paid this amount for a special plane trip.”
According to the report, with the choice of the airport and then the arrival in Moscow, things did not go well either.
“Less than a day before departure, we received the news that we can only get off at Seremetyevo airport if we still pay almost € 20,000 because the airport only serves flights with less than 50 passengers in the VIP terminal. The airline has forgotten about this insignificant little rule throughout its organizational work in recent months. If we do not pay this amount, we will only be able to land at Domodedovo airport (much further from Moscow, ed.) ”.
As the Hungarian team was eventually forced to move to the last airport, “as it smelled quite downhill,” they also had to skip Friday’s training because they simply didn’t get to the hall on time due to the longer bus route and the prolonged airport entry and management.
Csaba Bartha closes his lines with the statement that he will be really calm only when they get home after the game, because the depressing question floats above their heads: “Who else knows what Moscow has in store for us?”
After such an introduction, it seems like a question at least as big as what the women’s BL first round may hold for the team and the Drukkers. The ETO Moscow match will be broadcast on National Sport Online minute by minute in text form.
