Verstappen’s training did not go well, the Dutch driver battled Lance Stroll down the stretch of the course in the final third of practice, and since neither of them wanted to let go of the other at Turn 1, the two racing cars collided at high speed.
Luckily it didn’t turn into a big accident, Verstappen was able to evict the box back, but Stroll’s car got stuck on the gravel pad and training was interrupted by red flags. The accident is being investigated by the judges.
It was not the only pause with a red flag in the hour and a half: before Pierre Gasly’s race car had to be interrupted due to a running race car.
The Ferraris performed well in the second training session: Charles Leclerc finished in fourth place while Sebastian Vettel finished the day with a sixth position, ahead of Gasly, who was forced to skip a significant part of training due to the aforementioned incident. Between the two Ferraris, Carlos Sainz finished fifth with McLaren.
Confident leader of the World Championship points race, Lewis Hamilton was only eighth fastest with a 1.3-second lead, ahead of Pierre Gasly.
In the top 10, Esteban Ocon and Alexander Albon remain closed.
Daniel Ricciardo finished only 13th, while Kimi Räikkönen drove the 15th fastest time. Antonio Giovinazzi closed the line with a 3.4-second lead.
