Stanley Johnson, father of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and a former MEP, announced on Thursday that he had applied to acquire French citizenship.
The man voted to stay in the 2016 Brexit referendum, while his son became a promotional face of the EU exit campaign.
Stanley Johnson wants to be a French citizen because of his close family ties.
“My mother was born in France, her mother was completely French, as was her grandfather. So for me, it is recovering something that is already mine. And it makes me very happy.”
he said.
Tonight ends the one-year transition period that closes Britain’s exit from the European Union. Shortly before the deadline, on December 24, negotiators reached an agreement on the future of trade relations between the EU and the United Kingdom, and the document also came into force today after it was signed by Queen Elizabeth.
