The British prime minister spoke in a television statement that the rate at which the new coronavirus mutation is spreading in the country is very frustrating and alarming. He noted that experts say this new version of the coronavirus is 50-70% more widespread, making it much easier for people to contract the virus or transmit it to others.

The fact that hospitals are under much greater pressure now than at any time since the onset of the pandemic is also not helping the situation, he added. Based on all of this, more steps must be taken to keep the rapidly spreading version of the virus in check and to keep vaccines moving at the right pace across the country, Johnson said.

The prime minister thus again proclaimed a national closure, asking the British to stay home (except in certain cases). Among other things, it has ordered primary and secondary schools to switch to distance education starting tomorrow, with the exception of children of working children and adults in key jobs.

Johnson explained that he knows the inconveniences for parents of closing schools, and this is not necessary because children would be at risk, but because educational institutions are an important channel for the spread of the coronavirus between homes.

He also mentioned in his speech that the country has now entered the fifth level of preparedness, which means that if they don’t, medical care will be overloaded in 21 days.
