The European Commission warned Hungary in a note about the current restrictions regarding the coronavirus, writes hvg.hu referring to the MTI news.
The European Commission has issued a formal warning to six EU member states because their cross-border restrictions, which are meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, could undermine free movement within the Schengen area.
Christian Wigand, spokesman for the Brussels body, listed six countries: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Sweden and Hungary.
Due to overly strict restrictions, the Committee draws attention in its note to the risk of free movement and the disruption of supply chains. Brussels is concerned that the restrictive measures imposed by these Member States when crossing borders go beyond the recommendations of the EU Council adopted four months ago, which proposed only “proportionate” measures to curb the epidemic, which would not impede free movement within the EU.
Member States have 10 days to reply to the committee’s question.
In the absence of satisfactory answers, the committee may even initiate an infringement procedure against them for breaches of EU law. Wigand did not specify in which member states exactly which measures are considered concerning, writes hvg.hu.
