Belarusian state television children’s program mocked by self-crowned dictator

The coronavirus and the fight against it. The situation at home and in the world.

Belarus TV 3 has been broadcasting the late-night show Sleeping for 40 years, but it probably aired its most special broadcast on Thursday night. The day after Lukashenko was installed in an unannounced whisper, or, as many in the opposition say: he was crowned, after the fraudulent elections, the state channel’s children’s program told a story about the Topa bear.

In the six minute scene, the grumpy teddy bear chases after Jana, the fox girl, and proclaims himself king over the other animals. Then the cheerful fairy Miss and the fox girl play together, walk and then start cooking, until Topa’s teddy bear runs away, demands to be taken there for the party, but falls from the throne, which is occupied by Jana, and the Fairy picks up the rolled crown.

Although, as is clear from the description, there was no overt politicking at the scene, it was not difficult for viewers to identify Lukashenko, who had taken the throne, and the two women leading the opposition, Svetlana Tihanovskaya and Maria Kaleshnikava. The first was taken out of the country and the second is in custody after a failed attempt. But there were also insinuations, ambiguous phrases that could be understood if someone wanted: the two opponents, for example, went for a walk in the same way as the protesters.

The joke does not sound rude (although in Hungary it is unthinkable in the state media), but it can have serious consequences in an almost open dictatorship like Belarus. However, Belarusian state television workers had shown resistance in the past: broadcasting was stopped for a time due to a strike, and then new workers were brought in from Russia to replace those who left.
