January 2 will mark 20 years since the death of Zambó Jimmy, a singer with a controversial personality who sold many records. Imre Zámbó first appeared in the Hungarian media as Jimmy on the Pest Program in April 1987. Starting in June, he performed regularly at the Margaret Island Casino Show in the company of a couple of soloists. The Hungarian Nation wrote about Jimmy Zámbó: “It is beginning to become fashionable, his recordings are broadcast more and more frequently on TV and radio, his first single is coming out. In autumn, he played the piano and sang at the Hallo Bar every night from 11:30 pm, except Sundays. Appears at the Casanova bar in November 1987, the ad is worth seeing: it started at 2pm, so at that time the singer used to get home only at dawn, if he did. After hearing Zambo Jimmy’s voice, they agreed that his band wasn’t needed, but it was at the bar. Paudits said that Zambo was a great success, that they loved it when he played the piano and sang alone, he almost did not want to let the guests go. When someone invited him to a brandy (which happened several times each night), Jimmy received it “kamuba”, which means they brought him tea while the guest was billed for the expensive drink. That is why Zámbo has the highest gas in the place.
According to Paudits, the afterimage of the underworld with a gun was not yet typical of Jimmy at the time. “He did wonderful things, but his sister took me to music elsewhere later. I met him as a cute boy who loved his wife, his family. After his death, of course, everyone bragged that he was a good friend!” added.
His first single
In January 1988 they delightedly wrote about their first single: “Surprise only for those who had a mystery: where has this special singer hidden until now? Jimmy was an instrumental musician at night, singing only occasionally, like most keyboards. How did Imre become Jimmy?
“I played in America for a year with a really good band, Black Steel. They called him, because they couldn’t say Imre, Jimmy. Sometimes I can sing four and a half octaves, but I don’t brag about that, because then I would always expect it of me. I played the piano for eleven years, and at first I sang just for fun, to a song somewhere high and sometimes deep. Then I kept increasing the distance between the tones until the four octaves finally came out, ”he told Capable 7 in the summer of 1987.
“I’m more of a songwriter who loves to sing. I want to bring the two together and that’s why I try to break into the forefront. I never wanted to be a star. I was only interested in music. I was happy to play in host bands at home and abroad. This school is the best for anyone who just wants to play music. I could play eight to ten hours a day. You learn a lot from this. They were loved in America, it was good and there was even a chance. But my heart returned home. To no avail, I’ve always been a Pest guy, and I’ll keep it up, “he said.
He became known for the New Wave program, before that he was not on television. “It was my first television appearance. When I got home I was working in a local area and word soon spread that there was a new voice. More and more people became interested in me, and to my greatest delight, at night I discovered several famous musicians among the spectators. One night, Zoltán Feyér came to see me and asked me to participate in his program. Nothing depends on me. I’ll do my best, but I wish it wasn’t just that this guy can sing four octaves. I want to be a singer who speaks to the heart. I am very attracted to blues music because I think that this music fits most of the emotion.
“Every decent singer in the world started with a single in the country and everyone at home is afraid of it. If someone can show in two songs what he knows, what kind of musician, and his success will be so great that he runs out of record immediately, then everything can come. Disco, concert and possibly success abroad. My talents? … I speak English well, my colleagues say that I am not a bad composer.I put my life in music.
