A fire broke out in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Cairo on Saturday, killing at least seven people infected with coronavirus and injuring several more, the MTI wrote.
Police said the flames were controlled, the injured were transferred to other hospitals and an investigation into the case was launched. According to the al-Ahram daily, the fire was allegedly caused by a short circuit.
A fire was reported in a hospital in Alexandria in June and also in a hospital in Cairo in May, the former seven died.
In Egypt, the number of confirmed coronavirus infections has recently skyrocketed, with the government reopening previously established health facilities to treat and isolate those infected and then shut down after the first wave of the epidemic subsided.
On Friday, the Arab Health Ministry reported 1,113 new daily infections and 49 deaths, the highest daily increase to date. Since the outbreak, more than 130,126 confirmed infections and around 7,300 deaths have been reported in Egypt. Experts also note that few tests are still being conducted in countries with more than 100 million, so the actual numbers are likely higher.
