There is an extremely deep crisis of confidence in Fidesz. It is easy to imagine that even the prime minister did not know the real reason for Szájer’s resignation, Klára Ungár, a former Fidesz and later SZDSZ, an openly gay politician, told Népszava.

The vast majority of right-wingers think in moderation and do not disdain homosexuals. We want there to be visible signs of this, which is why Gábor Aradi explained in 2003 why he created a Fidesz civic circle for gays. In an interview with Népszabadság at the time, she stressed that “our political beliefs are independent of our gender identity.”

The Diverse Hungary Civic Circle was not received with open arms. At first, Csaba Hende, who coordinates the organization of civic circles, did not even believe that it was a real initiative and called the news a provocation. Then it turned out to no avail that the circle actually existed: the organization was not registered. The reason was that its objectives and existence were incompatible with the activities of civil society. Finally, it was agreed that it would be better for everyone if the gay civic circle was transformed into an association.

Népszava recalls that when civic circles formed around Fidesz in the early 2000s, Gábor Aradi created a civic circle for Fidesz gays. In an interview with Népszabadság at the time, she stressed that “our political beliefs are independent of our gender identity.”

However, the Diverse Hungary Civic Circle was not received with open arms, Csaba Hende, who coordinates the organization of civic circles, did not initially believe that it was a real initiative and called the news as a provocation. Then, although it turned out that the circle actually existed, the organization was not registered. The reason was that its objectives and existence were incompatible with the activities of civil society.

Klára Ungár, a former member of Fidesz and later a member of the SZDSZ of Parliament, was one of the first (in 2001, in Life and Literature) to “get ahead”. Now, he told Népszava, the case of József Szájer sheds light on the serious problems and damage it would cause if someone were to go into hiding. “We can imagine the mental burden he would have if he did not know what to do with his wishes, even during curfew,” Ungár said. According to him, it is definitely worth looking for life situations, living in a city, being a member of a party in which you do not have to hide. When József Szájer resigned from the EP on Sunday, he wrote that he was “putting an end to long-term thinking.” According to Klára Ungár, the statement can be interpreted differently afterwards: Szájer may not be tired of political work, but of secrecy.

There is an extremely deep crisis of confidence in Fidesz. It’s easy to imagine that even the Prime Minister did not know the real reason for Szájer’s resignation, says Klára Ungár, who in 2015 was prompted by one of the Prime Minister’s homophobic texts to mention József Szájer and Máté Kocsis, Józsefváros at the time . mayor. Szájer did not respond, but Kocsis (saying he was “not a fool”) filed a lawsuit. In the end, Klára Ungár won. The court ruled that it is not offensive in itself to claim that someone is gay, regardless of whether the statement covers reality.
