With 134 votes in favor, 45 against and 5 abstentions, Parliament approved the ninth amendment to the Basic Law on Tuesday morning. Fifteen MPs did not vote, before the final vote, DK politicians withdrew from the Chamber.

The draft law on the ninth amendment to the Basic Law was introduced by Justice Minister Judit Varga on November 10, according to the government, in order to provide greater protection for families and greater safety for children.

According to the proposal of the Minister of Justice Judit Varga, it is added that “the mother is a woman, the father is a man” and the basis of the family relationship is marriage. The section on the protection of children is supplemented by the fact that “Hungary protects the right of children to their own identity according to their gender of birth and guarantees education in accordance with values ​​based on constitutional identity and the Christian culture of our country “.

Article 38 of the Basic Law stipulates that “the constitution, operation, extinction and operation of the public interest trust foundation is governed by a cardinal law”, so that only a two-thirds majority can be used to access the systems foundation in which it also works.

Public money has also been defined as “public money is the income, expenditure and claim of the State” and henceforth there will only be three types of special legal order instead of the previous five.

But not only is the Constitution being amended, but also the Electoral Law: With 134 votes in favor and 60 abstentions, Parliament voted on the amendment to add 71 individual candidates to the national list in the future instead of 27.

The amendment was officially introduced as part of the fight against camouflage parties, but its main effect is rather that it has permanently pushed the opposition, which will start together in 2022, onto a common list.
