Antiviral drugs are also effective, but they are not miracle cures.

Coronavirus: the second wave

Half a year after the spring outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the second wave of the pandemic has arrived. The radical increase in the number of infected is forcing more and more countries to re-impose restrictions, despite the fact that the world economy has not even recovered from the effects of the spring outbreak. According to the signs, the second wave also reached Hungary. Follow our news!

In view of the coronavirus epidemic, the chief physician of the South Pest Central Hospital – National Institute of Hematology and Infectious Diseases recommends that everyone receive infusion vaccinations starting next week.

János Szlávik said on M1 that the number of people infected with the coronavirus and the number of deaths in Hungary has been high in recent days, and further growth is expected. The number of infected people is increasing across Europe, and we must be prepared for such a high number in Hungary as in the Czech Republic and Romania, he added. He stressed that people at risk, the elderly and those with chronic diseases should continue to be cared for, since 99% of deaths come from them.

János Slavik called protecting people at risk of influenza particularly important, because according to international observations, the chances of death are doubled if someone suffers from a coronavirus and an influenza infection at the same time. He emphasized that flu vaccines are reliable and safe, and should not be given only to people who have a fever, are ill, or are allergic to the vaccine.

Remdesivir is an effective panacea but not

He also said that clinical trials of a drug called remdesivir will begin Monday at South Pest Central Hospital, as so far this drug has been shown to be effective against the new type of coronavirus.

Several antiviral drugs have been available in Hungary in recent months and will remain so for the near future, he added.

The chief physician said the antiviral treatment resulted in more patients recovering much earlier than those who did not receive these drugs, and they were less likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and more likely to survive. Antiviral drugs are not miracle cures, but they can help cure elderly patients, he said, adding that drugs now under investigation can only be brought to GPs after clinical trials, until then only they can use in hospitals.

South Pest Central Hospital currently cares for 180 coronavirus patients, 32 of whom are on ventilators.
