With a family home in Üllő, the Concrete Studio team won the 2020 Media Architecture Award in the best building category, while the Albert Szántó Hunor Landscape Restoration Center won the 2020 Media Architecture Award.

This year, for the sixteenth time, the most outstanding architectural works of the year in question were recognized as part of the Media Architecture Award – this time online – gala organized by the Forum of Architects at the House of Contemporary Art Trafó on Saturday – the organizers MTI reported Sunday.

According to its announcement, around 180 entries competed in the 2020 competition, including an international pre-jury that selected five finalists in the construction and design categories ahead of the gala night.

The pre-jury was chaired by Indira van’t Klooster (Holland), Director of the ARCAM Amsterdam Architecture Center, with Brendan Cormier (Canada / UK); Stefan Ghenciulescu (Romania), editor of Zeppelin magazine, and Csaba Nagy, Archikon’s chief designer, participated in the work.

Indira van’t Klooster highlighted in her message that the projects selected this year are of high architectural quality also on a European level, but the range of programs and themes has not been as rich as in previous years. “We have seen a lot of private and mostly unique residential buildings, quite a few offices,

but few projects related to public space or community housing, nor those that seek solutions to current problems such as climate change or the expansion of urban limits. It is not necessarily the fault of the architects: perhaps the clients have stopped being entrepreneurial and ambitious, or perhaps the money is lacking ”.

– quoted the president of the prejury in the statement.

The jury – made up of Dávid Zubreczki, expert, chairman of the jury, László Bagi, editor, journalist (Forbes); András Földes journalist, video (Telex); András Zsuppán journalist (Reply online) and architect Nóra Géczy (Széchenyi István University) – presented the award for the best building to the Konkrét Studio team for their family home in Anvil.

Critics considered it outstanding that the building was presented jointly by the designer and the client, thus demonstrating that it is adapted to its function. They also drew attention to the peculiarities of the choice of the exterior material of the house: black corrugated slate, although at first it may be a questionable choice in a single-family house, from another point of view the house shows an alternative to the demanding use of the building materials used in the Hungarian settlements, the jury said.

Among the plans, Albert Szántó Hunor won recognition with the work of the Landscape Restoration Center (consultant: Miklós Vannay). This plan, which had previously won many other prestigious awards, attracted the attention of the jury for its compromised duration. The jury noted that this approach is very important in light of today’s wasteful building practices and that the use of natural and degradable building materials should be welcomed in an era of deepening climate crisis.
