The decorative lighting will be turned off from 7:00 p.m. on December 23, after the President of the Government, Viktor Orbán, announced that the business tax will be cut in half to help SMEs and individual entrepreneurs in the epidemic.

38 mayors issued a joint appeal after considering that the prime minister would “execute Hungarian local governments instead of helping those in need.” They see that halving the business tax has nothing to do with tackling the economic crisis, but only with Fidesz’s power politics.

With the money, local governments provide public services such as public transportation, garbage collection, maintenance, public lighting, management of green spaces, but with this they pay social subsidies, various events and theaters.

The performance of these tasks was compromised by the Prime Minister’s decision. The individual compensation promised to settlements of more than 25,000 people will be distributed by the government on a political basis, at the will of Viktor Orbán.

In their statement, the mayors wrote, calling for a joint protest by the municipalities that want to protect their public services and their ability to act.

We must act together against a government decision made with dark intentions that evokes dark times. As a sign of their protest, the adhering municipalities will turn off the decorative lights of their settlements from 7:00 p.m. on December 23 in defense of public services.

They demand that the government reverse the decision to cut the business tax in half.
