The European Parliament does not change the rules for the good of the Hungarian Prime Minister.

According to the rules, only the head of state or government can represent the member states in the debates of the European Parliament, therefore, the Minister of Justice Judit Varga cannot speak in the European Parliament debate on Hungary on Thursday.

EP spokesman Jaume Duch said at a press conference that the only exception was if the politician in question represented the rotating EU presidency, in this case Croatia.

Therefore, Judit Varga cannot speak in tomorrow’s debate, at the request of Viktor Orbán.

The EP spokesman even added that they considered it a positive development that the Hungarian government also wanted to participate in the debate, which had given Orbán several opportunities before. However, the rules are not changed.

On Tuesday, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, invited Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to a debate on Thursday on the Hungarian Authorization Law and the situation of the Hungarian rule of law.

Orbán responded to Sassol the same day, in which he wrote that all his strength and energy are currently linked to the fight against the epidemic, so that the Minister of Justice and Affairs of the European Union, Judit Varga, can participate in the debate on behalf of the Hungarian government.

“Given the presence of a Secretary of State on behalf of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, I respectfully request that Minister Judit Varga have the opportunity to speak in the debate,” wrote the Hungarian Prime Minister.

The situation is quite spicy, because Orbán was invited mainly due to the statement of the Minister of Justice Judit Varga. It’s varga MTIA few days ago, the EP said it wanted to pass judgment on Hungary amid a coronavirus epidemic, ignoring the Hungarian government.

The debate on the Hungarian authorization law will begin at 9 am on Thursday with the participation of Vera Jourová, vice-president of the European Commission. There will be no vote now, Members will not adopt any resolution after the debate, but it is not ruled out that a vote will be taken in a subsequent plenary session.
