Asus TUF FA506 test – it’s not just a simple hardware upgrade Hardware Zone

[ad_1]

The previous generation of Asus TUF series (The Ultimate Force) was greeted not only by Game Channel readers and gamers with positive thoughts, but also by the entire gaming market as Asus has taken advantage of the AMD / NVIDIA pairing. The manufacturer has combined cheaper AMD processors with mid-range NVIDIA graphics cards, which have delivered fair performance at an affordable price. In 2020, the company not only modified the internal hardware, the TUF FA506 also renewed the series externally. In our case, the A15 test was based on our experience.

The 2020 update came with the “don’t change a good recipe” principle, but there was still someone in the kitchen who did a little more sprinkling in the bowl, making everything even better. And this person is clearly AMD, since the Ryzen 3000 series has been replaced by Ryzen 4000 processors, which they brought tremendous progress with them. More or less that we might start to feel sorry for Intel after the first tests, since the ninth generation was absolutely beaten by AMD news and the tenth generation would not take a clear position next to the blues.

Let’s not run that far, because Asus put him alone. Designers redrawn the machines almost from scratch, resulting in an even more sophisticated, high-quality look, among other things: The new series was just beautiful, and there were few well-matched looks among gaming laptops.

What is perhaps more important than design is the size reduction of about 7 percent, which may not seem like much at first, but trust me, they add a lot to the overall effect and sense of quality. In fact, we have to swallow less with a compromise in exchange for our mid-range choice, which already sounds good, right? In addition, the machines still meet MIL-STD-810H standards, i.e. we have a tougher partner than average with us.

For many, it may also be strange for the laptop, which comes in gray and black, to become a 17.3-inch model in 2020, in addition to the 15.6-inch version. We would also be curious to see how much the two versions are selling and we would also dare to hope that this brother will fall apart in 1-2 years. Blessed with the aforementioned name and blessed with a very strange name, the gray fortress and the black bonfire sound very serious, we used the former and, according to the images, we did better.

Overall, Asus has innovated a lot in terms of shape compared to the previous generation, which is especially recommended as they could have done so based on the power and novelty of the Ryzen 4000 processors and then added the exterior in the next Serie.

By the way, we can also have a positive experience by going through the laptop further, since in addition to the traditional USB connectors, the Type-C is also associated, and we can also connect our external display to the machine with an HDMI cable. Of course, the Ethernet connection is not far behind, neither are WiFi and Bluetooth. The bottom of laptops is not often seen, but the “honeycomb” cooling design also gives the bottom a special feature.

Incidentally, Asus has always been good at refrigeration, many innovative technologies have already been used in previous TUF and ROG machines, for example here It is worth highlighting the self-polishing heat duct., and that it was able to keep under control the Ryzen processor with buffalo technology and the sufficiently powerful NVIDIA RTX graphics card.

Before we go deeper inside, let’s look at the screen. We had the 15.6-inch FA506 (A15), but as mentioned, the 17.3-inch version called FA706 (A17) will also be available in Hungary. Both models will be available in 60Hz and 144Hz versions. It’s also not about what a model with a higher image refresh rate would clearly recommend if you’re already buying a player note.

Here, too, it’s worth mentioning the difference between generations, as the FX505 family we tested only offered 120Hz, and the 2020 upgrade brings 144Hz, which was still the absolute peak for laptops a few years back. . We can’t complain about the brightness, viewing angle, and colors of the IPS screen, but it obviously wouldn’t be the best option if you work as a graphic or video editor during prime time and just want to play 1-1 hours at night. . And home office video meetings can be solved with a 720p webcam, which will surely serve that purpose.

It’s time to get to the hardware, as there is a lot to talk about. The test model we had was powered by an AMD R7 4800H processor, 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card, and the storage was a 1TB PCIe SSD. The latter is also a point that we are especially happy about, since from this year we will not really know the TUF models with HDD, in fact incoming SSD size was also set to 512GB.

And thanks to a second slot, we’ll be able to expand this even further if we can’t handle the next Call of Duty 20GB update anymore. This hardware combination is very percussive, but it should be mentioned that the cheaper models may come with AMD R5 4600H, 8GB of memory and NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, which is what we expect for fair performance anyway, especially for the price.

For anyone who can, be sure to pick out the AMD R7 4800H, as this 8-core, 16-wire novelty outperforms 9th-generation Intel processors and will presumably work seamlessly with the 10th-generation Intel Core i7 as well. Along with 16GB of DDR4 memory, fast storage and what we believe to be one of the best NVIDIA RTX graphics cards (in terms of value for money), we get an excellent package.

Obviously you don’t want to run PUBG or Escape from Tarkov not so optimized at 144fps in 2K or 4K, but you can also run PUBG, LoL, CS: GO, Valorant, and Fortnite with minor tweaks. brought the performance that the screen can serve. Of course, the last Call of Duty also worked very well on the machine, if we want a value of around 144 fps, but we prefer to remove the middle setting and deploy some sliders.

It is also important to mention the keyboard, as the touchpad will surely be replaced by a more serious mouse during games, but many do not use an additional keyboard. Fortunately, Asus is among the best in this area and this has been demonstrated with current TUF models. We have seen several times that perhaps manufacturers highlight the most commonly used WASD keys. Here, too, we get this kind of distinction, and the sound-so-called Overstroke technology ensures that the keys are activated quickly so that we can react immediately in games.

The keyboard, certified for 20 million keystrokes (!) Is of course in Hungarian (the test copy came with an English keyboard), which may also be an important decision for many. We also get RGB lighting, which supports the manufacturer’s AURA RGB technology, i.e. all other RGB TUF and ROG accessories can be used to coordinate keyboard lighting. However, we cannot count on transitions and premium light orgies, unfortunately AMD versions are still at a disadvantage in this area, but otherwise we get fair quality lighting technology which is especially important for night games.

When it was announced in January, Asus was also proud to be the first player model to receive a 90Wh battery. Of course, this is only one option for now, we have to get ahead with an idle 48W unit. Obviously, it would be more ideal for each version to get a bigger battery, but perhaps this is an area where most manufacturers have started to move forward these days, so that we can get even more development in the coming generations.

Of course, for a gaming laptop, the almost number one rule is to always connect the machine to the power outlet while you play as this will give you maximum performance and won’t take us out of the game on lap 10 with 3% load. Runtime is basically good compared to category, smaller internet jobs, a few minutes of graphic work and general navigation do not require working next to the outlet, but obviously with its weight of 2.3kg, the machine is not really designed to take you to the corner cafe.

There was nothing left to summarize. As already mentioned, the new families TUF FA506 (A15) and TUF FA706 (A17) will debut somewhere around 300,000-330,000 HUF in the coming days, and the strongest models can reach half a million forints. Due to the current global situation, we have been informed that in the first round, it is not certain that all versions will start at the same time, so anyone who does not like what will be offered should wait a few more weeks.

This new generation is sure to offer progress in almost every field, and not just small steps. The new processors work much better than their predecessors and compete seamlessly with Intel solutions, the use of materials has improved even more and we have been able to carve them to measure.

The next step could be a small weight loss, it would be nice to say that they are below 2kg of player events so that the engineers don’t sacrifice refrigeration either. We would also be happy if the RGB lighting were completed as we are still talking about machines that are worth hundreds of thousands of forints in 2020. However, these are all “small” commitments in exchange for a good value package.

The price of 300-500 thousand forints makes the Asus TUF FA506 a great value laptop.

The price of 300-500 thousand forints makes the Asus TUF FA506 a great value laptop.

In exchange for our amount between 300-500 thousand forints, one we get a completely renovated chestnut with one of the best mobile processors on the market, with fast storage and practical expandability.

Now, in addition, Asus is running a launch campaign that is valid for the entire month of May and early June. If you buy a gaming laptop with a fourth-generation AMD Ryzen processor and register at rog.asusvilag.hu, you can choose a TUF H7 earphone and M5 mouse, or a practical pouch and additional insurance for the device.
