The Greens are now looking at Cumulus Networks, and that certainly has something to do with the previous acquisition.
It’s been a year since we wrote about NVIDIA’s $ 6.9 billion deal. Of course, buying Mellanox was not easy, after all, it required different permits, but in the end, the authorities accepted the acquisition. We now have a new highlight for the greens, namely Cumulus Networks.
If anyone is guessing because of the time when it all has to do with Mellanox, make no mistake, as Cumulus Networks is working on developing a network-centric Linux distribution, not to mention software for analyzing a network called NetQ. The relationship between the two companies dates back to 2013, when Mellanox began developing its Open Ethernet strategy, and today Cumulus Networks partly provides the background for the software for Mellanox devices, although they also have their own operating system called Onyx.
The purpose of the Cumulus Networks acquisition may be to provide more options for software defined data centers in terms of software background. Also, of course, NVIDIA would maintain the Mellanox Onyx operating system, which is otherwise quite similar to Cumulus Linux, but this may not be the case in the future as it is easier to point to different directions with the help of two systems.
NVIDIA has so far only announced their interest and has not yet submitted a specific offer for Cumulus Networks.
