How much importance does Angela Merkel attach to the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, the best known Russian opposition? How big it was could already be inferred from the fact that the North Stream 2 pipeline had also included the previously taboo subject, threatening Russia with even abandoning its country’s long-term energy strategy and terminating the contract with Russia for the pipeline almost finished.
But now he gave another sign of how important the matter was to him personally. Based on his own information, Spiegel wrote that he had even secretly visited Navalny while recovering at the Charite Hospital in Berlin. The fact of his visit has since been confirmed on Twitter by Navalny himself.
Spiegel reports that the visit took place in complete secrecy, but so much so that it was not yet written exactly when it took place.
Navalny fell ill on August 20 on a plane from Tomsk to Moscow. His staff already suspected poisoning at that time, so they organized his evacuation from the country because they did not trust that he would receive adequate treatment there, much less that the authorities would find out any merit about what happened. Germany, which tends to react rather sparingly to Russia’s various actions, was immediately activated in this case. The possibility of poisoning Navalny was communicated to the highest levels of government. (Via The National Post)
