An oil tanker in the English Channel was hijacked, so in an action Sunday night soldiers from the British Ministry of Defense stormed the ship.

According to early news, seven people were detained on the ship named Nave Andromeda, but 22 crew members were found intact. The hijackers verbally threatened the ship’s crew, who followed their instructions. The kidnappers were likely Nigerian nationals seeking asylum in the UK.

The 228-meter long Liberian-registered vessel set sail from Lagos, Nigeria, on 6 October and was due to arrive in Southampton at 10 a.m. Later, the police realized that there might be something wrong with the ship as it was south of White Island instead of Southampton.

The Navy and Coast Guard, as well as the Border Guard, also participated in the rescue. During the action, helicopters flew over the ship and blocked the sea three miles wide from the ship. (CNN, BBC)
