China launched an emergency program in July to use three of the experimental vaccines developed in the country among people at particular risk of infection. Two of the vaccines were developed by the state subsidiary Sinopharm, China National Biotech Group (CNBG) and the third by Sinovac Biotech.

In an interview on Wednesday, Liu Qing-chen, president of Sinopharm, said that no serious side effects were observed in any of the people vaccinated under the emergency program and that no one was infected with the coronavirus. Both Sinopharm vaccines contain an inactive virus that cannot multiply in human cells and triggers the body’s own immune response. Based on data from clinical trials, two doses of each vaccine per person are required for protection.

The experimental vaccines are currently in the third phase of clinical trials, and are being tested in nearly 60,000 people abroad. A total of 40,000 blood samples were taken from the test subjects 14 days after they received the second dose of the vaccine, Liu said.

Currently, five coronavirus vaccines developed in China are in the fifth phase of clinical trials. These are being tested in the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Peru, and Pakistan, among others.
