The victims were automatically robbed through mobile bank cards.
IBM Trusteer has uncovered a shocking financial fraud, security researchers say that a group has stolen millions of dollars from the bank accounts of Europeans and North Americans in a matter of days. The victims appear to have been the first to install mobile applications with a dummy component, obtain their names and passwords to log into netbank and access their two-step verification codes sent by the banks.
Then, the attackers, in an automated way, with an emulated version on Android computers, logged in on behalf of the clients in the official mobile folder of their bank and transferred all the money from their accounts. To bypass systems trying to detect financial fraud, the attackers cloned a wide variety of identities from the victims’ phones, including GPS coordinates, reducing the risk of premature drops.
According to the researchers, the attackers carried out thefts in waves, once using more than 16,000 clients to customize more than 16,000 clients using twenty emulators, and other times they could disguise themselves for 8,100 different devices with a single emulator.
As of yet, there is no information on the identity of the scammers and how they will actually try to gain access to the stolen money.
