At the age of 95, choreographer Ágnes Roboz, character dance teacher, honorary university professor and worthy artist, passed away on Tuesday, the Association of Hungarian Dance Artists reported to MTI.

As they write, Ágnes Roboz, the “teacher”, as the national and international dance industry called her, was one of the last great teachers. He worked with the best choreographers in the world including Jiri Kylián, Gret Palucca, Hans van Manen and taught at their most famous schools, introducing them to character dance and Hungarian folk dance.

There is hardly any important Hungarian dancer in Hungary who had not been a student of Ágnes Roboz. Behind her there is a very significant, active and professionally outstanding career. – can be read in the announcement of the Hungarian Dance Artists Association.

Born on June 18, 1926, Ágnes Roboz studied dance at the Troyanoff Ballet Academy between 1938 and 1944, and then graduated as a choreographer in 1950 from the Faculty of Theater and Film Arts, where Olga Szentpál was the head of the department. Already during his university years, he directed folk dance groups in various factories and performed choreographies.

He was the principal choreographer of the Budapest Operetta Theater between 1950 and 1956, composing several highly successful pieces. He was a founding professor at the State Ballet Institute, founded in 1950, and a leader of the character dance working community.

She taught at the Palucca School in Dresden between 1958 and 1960, then went back to work at the ballet institute after her return. Meanwhile, it has been choreographed continuously and with great success both on stage and in film. He has worked with Emilia Emilia in Love, The Sons of the Stone-Heart Man, The Stars of Eger, and with the ensemble Ex Antiquis, among others.

After her husband’s death in 1971, at the invitation of the Dutch Minister of Culture, she taught classes in Hungarian and other folk dance at the Conservatory in The Hague.

For the next 35 years, he worked as a dance teacher at the Brabants Conservatory, the Amsterdam Theater Academy, Rotterdam College and the Royal Ballet School in London, where character dance is still taught to teachers according to his system. For fourteen years she was a teacher at the Cologne Summer Dance Course. He has been a teacher for fifteen years in various summer courses around the world (United States, Chile, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, France, Finland) and has regularly taught courses at the Hungarian School of Dance.

He has choreographed with one of the best ensembles in the world, the Nederlands Dans Theater, the Dutch National Ballet and several professional folk ensembles.

In 2008, he returned home after 35 years of official work abroad. Even at the age of 95, he was an active member of the Hungarian dance art and public life: he was a regular member of the examination committee, taught character dance courses, and was a patron of young choreographers and creators.

His work has been recognized with numerous awards. His honors include the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (1995), the Pro Cultura Hungarica Award (2001), the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Association of Hungarian Dance Artists (2006), and in 2008 he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist.
