According to the announcement on the Újpest FC website on Wednesday evening, the club’s management and owner decided to terminate the contract with the head coach, taking into account the performance of recent months. From January, the German Michael Oenning will lead the team, his second coach will be István Gál. Péter Víg and András Babócsy remain members of the professional staff.
The 55-year-old Oenning began his coaching career in 1999. He was first an assistant coach for the German U18 and U20 teams and later worked for Borussia Mönchengladbach as an assistant to Dutchman Dick Advocaat. He was then a member of the coaching staff of VfL Wolfsburg, then VfL Bochum and 1st FC Nürnberg. He has also worked in Hungary, as between 2016 and 2018 he first kept Vasas FC at the forefront, then the following year he led to third place and the European League playoffs. Since then, he has been the coach of Magdeburg and then the Greek Aris of Thessaloniki.
