A series of lies, betrayals and the vicious cycle of terror have hampered the reconciliation process in the Middle East for decades, Trump said, noting that today the world sees that they prefer understanding and cooperation in the region.

It is “an incredible and very important day” for the whole world, “Trump stressed.

The ceremony was held in the Rose Garden of the White House, and the US president and the politicians who signed the document delivered their speeches on the balcony, in front of invited guests, including Péter Szijjártó, the sole Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the European Union.

Subsequently, the text of the agreements establishing the diplomatic relationship was signed in triplicate in English, Arabic and Hebrew by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Abdallah bin Zajid Al Nahayan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates and Abdel-Latif of Bahrain, Bahrain Chief of Diplomacy of the Kingdom.

Donald Trump, among others, said in his speech: “We are changing the course of history this afternoon.” He stressed that “after decades of division and conflict, we have reached the dawn of a new Middle East.” He called the conclusion of the so-called Abraham Convention agreements a “great step” whereby “people of different faiths and different backgrounds can live together in peace and prosperity.”

“This convention shows that the nations of the region are breaking with their failed approaches in the past. The peoples of the Middle East can no longer hate Israel as a reference to radicalism or extremism,” he said.

The Israeli prime minister and the two Arab foreign ministers thanked the US government and personally Donald Trump for putting the deal under the roof.

“Those who bear the wounds of war especially value the benefits of peace,” said Benjamin Netanyahu, who also recalled personal memories in his speech. The prime minister of the Jewish state said he hoped that other Arab countries would join the deal and that the deal “could end the Arab-Israeli conflict once and for all.”

The Emirates Foreign Minister thanked the Israeli Prime Minister for “stopping the annexation of the Palestinian territories.” And the Bahraini Foreign Minister asked Israel for a “just, comprehensive and lasting” solution in the negotiations with the Palestinians. The minister urged a two-state solution, that is, the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Under the Abrahamic Convention, both the Emirates and Bahrain will establish diplomatic relations with Israel, open embassies in the Jewish state, and also foster economic and political cooperation. At the same time, Israel suspends the annexation of the Palestinian territories in the West Bank.

Before the ceremony, the President of the United States received the Israeli Prime Minister and the Foreign Ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain separately in the Oval Office of the White House. In a meeting with Netanyahu, the US president said that “at least five or six countries” have already indicated that they will soon join the convention. However, it did not specify which countries would be involved.
