Carla Suárez Navarro, 31, from Spain, was attacked by the disease, announcing in her community on Tuesday that she had received chemotherapy for her malignancy in the past six months. She said doctors had told her that her Hodgkin lymphoma was small-scale and curable, as it was discovered at an early stage.
Suárez Navarro, once in the top ten of the world ranking – he was sixth in February 2016, he is currently 71 years old – wants to retire from professional tennis at the end of the year. The player announced a week ago that he would not participate in the current US Open for health reasons. The Spanish athlete reached the final 11 times in a WTA tournament, two of which he could win. He last played a match in the WTA series on February 25.
“I’m fine at the moment and I feel comfortable with the situation. I will face everything that awaits me,” said Suárez-Navarro, who added, characterized by patience and great self-confidence throughout his career. “He is not the easiest opponent I have to deal with, so I will need all my strength.”
