The Epic Games Store hasn’t held back this year either, with 15 video games released to users for free in the second half of December. Deals change every 24 hours, every day at 5pm, which is why we recently got our next port, which is none other than The Long Dark.
The Long Dark is an open-world survival game from Hinterlands Studio in which a pilot crashing his plane tries to stay alive in the icy Canadian landscape for as long as possible. An early access version of Steam was already released in 2014, but it was only declared ready in 2017. Although we are talking about a smaller project, it has been a great success: 3.3 million copies have been sold as of September 2019.
What makes the game interesting is that, unlike many other pieces in the genre, there are no exotic elements here, not coincidentally with the motto “survive the silent apocalypse!” Sure, it’s not very common for the protagonist to land his plane due to a geomagnetic storm, but otherwise, the biggest threat to him are bears, wolves, and the infernal handicapped. Important mechanics include alternate nights and days, random changing weather, and poisoning and diseases is. It’s not an action-packed piece, but its atmosphere is even stronger.
The Long Dark was the third Winter Action game from the Epic Games Store, the first was Cities: Skylines and the second was Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty.
