The dutch Ziggo F1 channel commentator Olav Mol can’t imagine Red Bull switching to Mercedes engines in the near future.
Honda’s announcement on Friday that the Japanese brand will leave F1 at the end of 2021 will trigger the Red Bull and the AlphaTauri team to find an engine supplier partner for the 2022 season, bringing new rules.
Honda is currently present as an engine manufacturer in F1, but this will end at the end of the 2021 season. As things stand, it is most likely that due to the forced situation, Red Bullt will be refueled by its former partner, Renault.
According to FIA sporting rules, if a team runs out of an engine supplier, it must be assisted by the team supplying the fewest number of participants. However, with the conversion of McLaren to Mercedes, Renault will be left without a partner next year.
However, Mol says it’s possible that while Honda will be leaving F1 in late 2021, Red Bull will continue to use Honda’s resources in 2022 as well.

“Red Bull can continue to use Honda’s resources and find someone to add their name to the product,” Mol wrote, referring to Red Bull’s previous solution where its Renault engines were named after Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer. .
According to Mol, there is no real possibility of a possible collaboration with Mercedes, and Red Bull co-founder and owner Dietrich Mateschitz would be opposed to such a collaboration.
