The Kaposvár Regional Investigation Prosecutor’s Office has prosecuted a policeman who accidentally shot his hunting partner in the head in the Szólád area last February for a minor crime that led to death and occupation.

The defendant participated in a big game hunt in the company of the victim as a professional hunter on February 25, in possession of a hunting license and a license to possess a hunting weapon. At the beginning of the hunt, the police officer placed three rounds in the magazine of his own telescopic shotgun and then loaded it into his barrel.

At the end of the big game, to continue the hunt, the perpetrator sat in the left rear seat of the victim’s car, but did not empty his gun, he was still carrying it in a barrel-loaded state on his lap. Meanwhile, the hunter was notified by phone that a game had been fired in another part of the hunting area and asked for help in processing it, so they were brought to the scene. The police officer placed his gun, still loaded in the barrel, behind the right front seat of the vehicle with the barrel facing up and then got out of the car.

Subsequently, at around eight o’clock in the evening, the hunter placed the fallen prey on the platform of his vehicle and then passed through the left side of the car towards the driver’s seat. At this point, the police officer, sitting in the left rear seat of the car, began to control his hunting weapon – to put it back on his lap – firing an innocent shot through the left rear window at the head of the hunter, who died immediately.

The hunting weapon must always be handled in such a way that it cannot cause personal injury even in case of accidental operation, it must be transported empty within the hunting area during hunting. The policeman violated this regulation, the death of the hunter occurred in a causal context, the crime charged to the defendant is punished with one to five years’ imprisonment.

The investigating prosecutor’s office has requested that the perpetrator be prohibited from participating in 2 years, 6 months in prison and five years of carrying a weapon if he admits his guilt in the preparatory meeting and also waives his right to a trial.
