A final verdict was rendered in the Curia on Friday in the case of John N., who was accused of murdering his wife, Judith, in 2014.

The Mansion aggravated the second instance verdict and sentenced the defendant to 21 years in prison for premeditated and intentional homicide.

The sanction includes the last 29 months in advance. The defendant participated in the trial through a remote hearing from Gy Penr Penitentiary.

The death of the victim was caused by alienation and the hand of the stranger was the accused, explained the judge in the reasoning. The biggest dilemma in the case from the start was exactly what form the defendant may have had to do with the death of his wife. At the Curia they concluded that, looking at the chain of events, only John N. could have killed him.

The man, who had previously worked as a butcher, was acquitted twice by the court on the grounds that the cause of death could not be determined by expert witnesses, thus the murder could not be proven. In the second case, however, he was convicted, not of murder, but of fatal bodily injury. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison as a fixed sentence, including the previous 29 months. All parties appealed the verdict, so the case went to the Mansion. Judit’s family wanted the court to declare a homicide.

Judit Kovács was murdered in May 2014 and her butcher, who was in the process of divorce, was charged with murder. Despite the fact that a protected witness saw the man scatter his wife’s remains from a bag in nearby Jelly Meadow and countless circumstantial evidence against him, the court acquitted him twice. John N. had previously abused the woman, so the court put him on trial and the victim died before the probation expired.
