A boat full of migrants caught fire and then exploded in the Crotone area of southern Italy on Sunday, killing at least four people, two missing and several injuries.
So far the bodies of four people have been found in the sea, including a woman. They look for two more people, but stop investigating after dark. Five migrants were injured, two of them suffered severe burns and are being treated in nearby hospitals.
The motor sailboat carrying the group arrived in the early hours of Sunday in the coastal waters of the province of Calabria in southern Italy, between Crotone and Catanzaro. There were just over twenty in the vehicle, including children.
The Italian Financial Guard ship caught up with him and wanted to escort the migrant ship to the port of Crotone, but caught fire on the way. Soldiers from the Financial Guard tried to evacuate the migrants, but part of the sailboat exploded due to the fire and almost everyone on deck fell into the water.
The rescue units that rushed to the scene removed three and then other bodies from the water. Two financial guards were also injured and taken to hospital with burns and broken legs. Last night some eighty migrants arrived off the Calabrian coast, almost half of whom are Iranian and Iraqi nationals.
Giorgia Meloni, president of the Italian Right Brothers (FdI), called the fatal case a “tragic climax” in the government’s irresponsible and percussive immigration policy.
