The 22-year-old athlete was driving in the field when he suddenly lost consciousness, fell to the ground and, although ambulances rushed to his aid, they failed to resuscitate him.

His death is presumed to have been caused by sudden cardiac arrest, the exact cause of which can be ascertained by a forensic medical examination. On Saturday a minute of silence was recalled at the Moscow velodrome.

Sveshnikov was a member of the generous Olympic framework, won a silver medal in Madison’s number of track cyclists at the 2018 Russian Championship and won the points race at the 2019 Russian Cup.
