Index – Abroad – 15 children hospitalized in New York for mysterious coronavirus disease

In New York, 15 children had to be hospitalized because they had multi-organ inflammatory symptoms that may be related to coronavirus infection. On Monday, the New York City Office of Health issued a health warning about it.

The patients ranged in age from 2 to 15 years, and were hospitalized between April 17 and May 1. Many of them tested positive for the virus and have anti-coronavirus antibodies. Some of them struggle with high fever, others show symptoms of toxic shock syndrome or have Kawasaki disease, which is accompanied by inflammation of the lymph nodes. The WHO is already investigating the possible link between the syndrome and the virus.

The latter disease causes inflammation of the artery walls, which reduces the amount of blood that enters the heart. Generally treatable, most children recover without serious and permanent damage to health, but some die. At least five of the patients required artificial respiration, but none has been lost so far.

British pediatricians have previously reported that there may be an association between the new coronavirus and the increased incidence of Kawasaki disease, and similar cases have been reported in Spain and Italy.
