Prisons are full, many are infected, and two convicts have already died from the virus.
Some 10,000 detainees have so far been released from Philippine jails to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in overcrowded prisons, Supreme Court Judge Mario Victor Leonen said Saturday.
According to Leonen, 9,731 people were released between March 15 and April 29.
According to the government, two convicts have died from coronavirus and more than 350 people have been identified in jails. Human rights organizations previously warned that the government of Philippine Prime Minister Rodrigo Duterte has not provided information on all the deaths that occurred in prison and that may be related to a coronavirus infection.
According to them, the authorities must take the unfortunate conditions in prison institutions seriously. Health officials say so far 9,000 people in the Philippines have been infected with the coronavirus so far, and 603 have died from it.
