According to the latest central bank data, the cash frenzy has also been occurring in Hungary for the past year; however, there are fewer forint denominations in circulation than at the end of March 2019.

At the end of March 2020, the value of the currency in circulation in Hungary was HUF 6,661.3 billion, according to recent MNB data.

Excluding seasonal effects, the first quarter value shows an increase of 5 percent, or HUF 295.1 billion, compared to the figure at the end of December 2019. The increase was mainly due to the fact that in the weeks Calendar 11 and 12 (i.e.March 9-22, 2020) after the announcement of the emergency due to the coronavirus epidemic, the outflow significantly exceeded the usual volume in the given period, but since late March the consolidated cash flow: can be found in the last interim report of the Central Bank.

The total value of 554.8 million banknotes in circulation on the last day of the first quarter of this year was HUF 6,572.3 billion. This represents an increase of 13 percent in value and 8 percent in volume compared to the same period last year.

The increase affected all denominations except HUF 500 (their number fell from 43 million to 31.9 million in one year), but it was really significant in the case of twenty thousand thousand forints. At the end of March this year, 229.8 million of the largest denominations were in circulation, compared to 199.1 million the year before. The value of the coins in circulation was HUF 78.5 billion, which amounted to HUF 2,026.3 million at the end of March 2020.
