Emergent BioSolution pharmaceutical plant in Baltimore revealed the need to replace raw material on April 1 after one of the manufacturer’s shipments stopped during quality control.

The government feared that the incident would erode confidence in the two vaccines, so it decided that from now on only the American J&J vaccines would be produced there. British-Swedish company AstraZeneca is in talks with the US government to find new production capacity.

Unlike the vaccine, developed jointly by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, the Janssen vaccine consists of a single dose and has been approved for a third emergency use in the United States. The AstraZeneca vaccine has not yet been approved.
